The Lions take to the mat this year with a small but dedicated group of novice wrestlers who are working hard, learning fast, and having fun. Junior Khasim Mumin and senior Eric Appenzeller return to competition after injuries sidelined them last season. Both have their eyes set on this year’s Pennsylvania and National Prep Tournaments.
On April 22, The Phelps School celebrated Earth Day through education and action. The morning started with an educational piece run by the National Honor Society, a documentary and a conversation piece. The students then completed several hours of community service including mulching, planting and painting on campus to help make the already beautiful Phelps campus even better. In the afternoon, the boys held a cookout, followed by a field day. Many smiles were shared by all, especially when it was wrapped with ice cream.
The Phelps School has joined the College in High School (CHS) program at the University of Pittsburgh for the 2021-2022 school year. The program allows high school students to gain Pitt credits for classes taken at their high school with an authorized instructor. The CHS program at Phelps means an International Relations class will be added to our course offerings for seniors and post graduates. The course will be a full year class taught by Dr. Jack Hasler, who has previously taught similar courses at George Washington University. The Phelps School Class of 2021 capped off its time on campus with Commencement on Friday, May 28, 2021. Colonel John C. Church, Jr. delivered the Commencement Address to the 24 graduates. Head of School Tony McGeorge and Dr. Caroline Whitbeck presented the diplomas. The ceremony ended with “Amazing Grace” played by bagpipers.
