10 January 2020 – Malvern PA, USA – Mr. Craig Jones has announced his plans to retire from school leadership and depart The Phelps School at the end of this 2020 academic year. The Board of Trustees has named Charles A. “Tony” McGeorge as the Interim Head of the all-boys preparatory school in Malvern, PA.
“Craig has been a dedicated and enthusiastic Head of School for Phelps,” said Stephany Fahey, President of Phelps and member of the Board of Trustees. “He is a devoted educator focused on our students and their long-term success. We are truly indebted to Craig for his many contributions to Phelps and salute his tireless service and commitment to the students, faculty, alumni and the entire Phelps community.”
Tony McGeorge joined the Phelps community in July 2019 as Counsel to the President. As the Interim Head of School, Mr. McGeorge will assume his responsibilities after graduation of this academic year. The Board of Trustees has asked Mr. Jones to closely collaborate with Mr. McGeorge throughout the remaining school year to ensure a smooth transition of leadership responsibilities. The board wants the School to take full advantage of Mr. Jones’ independent school expertise and leverage the positive momentum and school climate he has created over the past several years. “There are tremendous opportunities ahead for Phelps and we are well positioned to flourish for the long-term,” said Mrs. Fahey. “We are truly fortunate to be able to conduct a smooth hand-off between these two outstanding professionals.”
Mr. McGeorge brings distinguished professional experience in the business, non-profit and academic sectors. He was the co-founder and past president of Mustang Scholars’ Foundation, Inc., which provided college scholarships to underprivileged young men and women of promise.
Prior to Phelps, Mr. McGeorge was president of both the Missouri Military Academy (MMA) in Mexico, Missouri, and Valley Forge Military Academy and College (VFMAC) in Wayne, Pennsylvania. He is a former president of the Association of Military Colleges and Schools of the United States and served on the Board of Directors of the Pennsylvania Association of Independent Schools. In 2015 Mr. McGeorge was selected as a National Association of Boarding Schools Initiative Top 100 school Heads.
His academic background includes a B.A. in Sino-Soviet History from Boston University and a M.S. in the Dynamics of Organizations from the University of Pennsylvania. He holds two certificates; one in Advanced Management and another in Educational Leadership both from Northwestern University’s Kellogg School of Business.
Mr. McGeorge taught at St. Joseph’s University in the Graduate School of Business and was selected to create their Capstone for the Pharmaceutical MBA. He also taught adjunctively Strategic Management and Organizational Theory at Eastern University. He is a Guest Lecturer at Immaculata University, University of the Sciences Philadelphia and Ursinus College.
