Head of School Welcome

On behalf of the entire Phelps Community, I would like to welcome you to our website. I’m very proud of the relationship I’ve had with The Phelps School since 1995. I started as a math teacher, and was immediately struck by the difference that the dedicated members of our boarding school community made in the lives of young men. I had finally found what a proper education looks like.  Accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools, our comprehensive college preparatory course of study provides classes which enable each boy to achieve scholastic success. Personal attention is paramount. An average class size of seven promotes every boy’s engagement in the learning process. The needs of students with learning differences are met in our Academic Support Program, while our 13 Advanced Placement courses enable students to challenge themselves with college level material. When students enter Phelps, they rapidly perceive its greatest strength – a dedicated faculty and staff. As Head of School, I am truly blessed to work with such remarkable individuals. Each instructor embraces the lifestyle commitment necessary to effectively serve our students in a residential realm. Our teachers are role models, who continually advance the School’s mission of a personalized education. We seek to educate the mind, heart and body. Their devotion helps foster strong, enriching and long-lasting relationships within our close-knit community. Our goal is for each young man to embrace a life abundant with opportunities and to make positive contributions to society. To accomplish this goal we emphasize our Affirmations of POWER (thinking Positively, serving Others, seeking Wisdom, pursuing Excellence, and living Responsibly). Students learn to appreciate the structured and caring atmosphere which serves as a fundamental basis for developing the self-discipline necessary for success beyond the classroom. Life after Phelps and higher education demands knowledge of matters not typically taught in school. In order to assist with this task, Phelps requires classes such as: Information Technology, SAT Prep, Culinary Arts, Personal Finance, Public Speaking, Transitions to College, Writing Seminar, and Ethics. Sycamore, our student information system, enables parents to stay on top of their son’s academic progress. Parents and students have easy access to school related matters such as: grades, online testing, disciplinary records, trimester grade reports, homework assignments, attendance records, teacher contact information, our school calendar, and school news. Although our website is informative, it cannot replace visiting campus and meeting our faculty and students. I encourage you to contact our Admissions Office and make an appointment to visit. It’s a decision for which you will be forever thankful. Good luck in your search, and thank you for taking the time to learn more about The Phelps School. Sincerely, Daniel E. Knopp
