A Letter from Head of School
Great schools, like their students, come in all shapes and sizes. College-prep boarding and day schools share similar goals, but their cultures are diverse and distinctive. At The Phelps School, our mission is clear. We help boys find their focus. We keep classes small, averaging seven students per section, to ensure personal attention. We offer a comprehensive academic support program to address cognitive differences, sharpen study skills, and help each student learn how to learn. For gifted students, we offer challenging AP courses and innovative projects to prepare students for enrollment at leading colleges and universities. Sports, clubs, afternoon activities, weekend trips, special events, and community service build camaraderie and character. We’re a small school making a huge impact in young men’s lives. Most of all, our boys will tell you that at Phelps, they have found the brothers they never knew. It’s gratifying to see.
I saw it for myself when I first visited this campus. Having spent nearly five decades at independent schools—as a student and the son of outstanding educators, then as a teacher, coach, principal, and head of school, as well as a consultant helping hundreds of boarding and day schools recruit their teachers and school leaders—I deeply appreciate what makes schools great. What I have seen at Phelps, the school family’s commitment to helping each boy become the best he can be, to nurture young men’s hearts as well as their minds, convinced me to join in this mission. I am honored to serve now as head of this wonderful school where teachers and mentors guide each young man toward his own Affirmation of POWER, encouraging and expecting him to think Positively, serve Others, seek Wisdom, pursue Excellence, and live Responsibly. I can’t imagine more rewarding work.
In Spring 2017, The Phelps School completed its accreditation renewal process with flying colors. The visiting team from the Middle States Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools praised the Phelps faculty for continuing to make personal attention paramount, for staying true to its mission in educating the individual boy.
